With the 2024 Draft in the rearview mirror, several high-ceiling prospects have made their way to campus with their eyes set on becoming the no. 1 pick in 2027. Here are 180+ college freshmen to keep an eye on in 2025 and beyond.

1. Charlie Bates, SS -- Stanford
HOMETOWN: Palo Alto, California
HEIGHT: 6-1

WEIGHT: 184

BAT/THROW: L-R

Bates is a smooth operator on the dirt with loose hands, athletic actions and the ability to make every play in all directions. He projects a shortstop moving forward thanks to his fluidity, internal clock, and rhythm that can be tough to find.

Offensively, it's a smooth, left-handed swing with a gap-to-gap approach, some loft and patience, taking the barrel to the zone and going with pitches instead of forcing to his pull-side. That said, when Bates cheats and/or ambushes in batting practice he's shown solid average raw power and he'll get pitchers over the right-field fence. Scouts want to see the body get bigger and stronger as the draft approaches to help ease questions surrounding the direction of the frame. They want to see what the player looks like a bit closer to final physical form. There's projection in the bat as Bates has the lean, wiry body evaluators look for.

Bates was an extremely popular name in the 2024 Draft but went unselected as most Stanford commits do. He'll be a premium name to watch in college baseball over the next three years.

On Saturday the Yankees and Marlins reportedly struck a deal that will send IF/OF Jazz Chisholm to New York in exchange for three prospects. As the Yankees make their push toward October it became paramount they improve an offense that had slowed in recent weeks. Chisholm certainly accomplishes that.

For New York

Chisholm, 26, is arguably enjoying the best year of his career running a .249/.323/.407 slash. He’s hit 13 homers and is approaching a career-high in stolen bases (22). While his offensive impact doesn’t quite match the 136 wRC+ he posted in an abbreviated 60 games from 2022, Chisholm has seen considerable improvements in his plate appearances posting career-bests in walk rate and strikeout rate. He’s also posting a barrel rate of 10.7 percent; the best mark of his career. The argument can be made he’s coming into his own as he approaches his peak.

The move to Yankee Stadium should be a huge boon for the left-handed slugger. While he’s only got 13 homers to show for his 2024 campaign thus far, according to Statcast he would have 19 at this stage if he were playing his home games in New York.

Chisholm is controlled through the 2026 season and will almost certainly replace Gleyber Torres at second base in 2025 and beyond as the incumbent infielder reaches free agency this winter. New York acquired a left-handed hitting, up-the-middle profile with 20/20 potential.

For Miami

Miami will receive a trio of prospects for Chisholm headlined by catcher Agustín Ramírez.

Ramirez, 22, is the prize of this deal. He ranked as the no. 18 prospect in the Yankees in our preseason rankings and was set to rank no. 5 in our midseason update. Ramirez has had a breakthrough 2024 campaign and is now considered one of the better catching prospects in the sport. He’s long been revered for a beautifully violent right-handed swing that carries damage to all fields. Pitch selection has been streaky at best, but pulling the trigger on fastballs in the strike zone has resulted in very loud barrels. Ramirez presently carries a .269/.358/.505 slash with 20 homers across Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Ramirez is a mostly a bat-only prospect with some concerns whether his athleticism will be able to stick behind the plate. There’s above average arm strength here, but lateral mobility and blocking have been a developmental focus. Regardless of the defense, Ramirez’s bat will carry his profile to the big leagues. He should make his debut in 2025 at the absolute latest. He is already on the 40-man roster and could be the next man up should Miami need help behind the plate.

Infielder Jared Serna, 22, will also go to the Marlins in the deal. Serna ranked as the no. 17 prospect in the Yankees system in the preseason and was set to rank similarly in the midseason update. His versatility carries value, though most see Serna as a second baseman full-time should he ever reach that amount of playing time at the big league level. He’s a sum-of-his-parts type of prospect who does not have a carrying tool, but should provide some value in all three phases of the game. He’s currently running a .253/.341/.444 slash at High-A Hudson Valley with 13 homers and eleven stolen bases. Serna is probably about ready to be challenged with a Double-A assignment.

Rounding out the package will be 19-year-old second baseman Abrahan Ramirez. Signed out of Venezuela as an international free agent a few years ago, Ramirez is annihilating the Florida Complex League boasting a.348/.447/.513 slash with two homers to boot. He’s a hit-over-power utility profile with an undersized frame and average tools from an athletic perspective. He is still at least a few years away, but has shown well from a bat-to-ball perspective. Ramirez was set to rank toward the bottom of our top 30 midseason prospect rankings for New York.

The MLB Draft provides an immensely valuable way for teams to improve. Even if the full effects won’t be apparent for a couple if years at least. With the 2024 Draft drawing to a close Tuesday, here are my five favorite classes.

We’re running on the assumption clubs sign their selections.  Failure to do so with a high pick could change the analyses below.

Cleveland Guardians

The Guardians were the owners of the First Overall selection, and had four picks in the top 100, while also picking up multiple top-1o0 caliber talents in later rounds. Outside the top 100, prepsters Cameron Sullivan and Chase Mobley both figure to get over-slot deals. There were plenty of fantastic picks for the Guardians.

Best Player: Travis Bazzana, 2B — Oregon State

Bazzana provides a combination of character, polish, and talent clubs look for as the face of the franchise. The Aussie has star upside while providing a reasonable floor of an above-average regular.

Best Pick: Joey Oakie, RHP — Ankeny HS (IO)

Oakie is a fascinating high school arm with a hopping fastball up to 97 mph, and a banger sweeper into the mid-80s that’ll get up to 3000 RPMs. The slider immediately belongs in a big-league bullpen, but there’s plenty of rotation upside to unlock if Oakie can throw more consistent strikes and figure out a third pitch.

DOYLE: 2025 Mock Draft

Milwaukee Brewers

Milwaukee’s first pick wasn’t until No. 17 overall, though they had four selections in the top 100 through prior trades. Milwaukee opted for more of a bucket approach, supposedly getting a discount with their first pick, and spreading the wealth down their board. Joey Broughton and James Nunnallee likely get over-slot bonuses.

Best Player: Braylon Payne, CF — Elkins High School (TX)

Payne was a surprising pick, but understandable why the Brewers were drawn to his abilities. He’s a 70 runner and a surefire center fielder, a trait there wasn’t much of in this class. Payne is only 17 years old, and scouts project him to grow into more muscle and impact at the plate as he matures.

Houston's Braylon Payne part of unique history in MLB draft

Best Pick: Jaron DeBerry, RHP — Dallas Baptist

DeBerry’s a projectable strike thrower with a metrically appealing arsenal. DeBerry’s a pronator who tends to cut his up-to-90 mph fastball. There are the makings of a plus slider and curveball with massive spin rates, as well as a cutter and changeup thrown in there as well. DeBerry throws plenty of strikes, and Milwaukee’s done well with developing arms like this.

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds were another winner of the Draft lottery alongside the Guardians and had the No. 2 pick. They had four Top 100 selections, but only one in the Top 50.

Best Player: Chase Burns, RHP — Wake Forest

The best pitcher in this Draft, Burns has a terrifying presence on the mound. A fireballer up to 101 mph to set up a filthy slider and a personality as electric as his stuff, Burns has every bit of the potential to become a big-league ace.

Best Pick: Tyson Lewis, SS — Millward West High School (NE)

Lewis’ name was thrown around as a potential first-rounder, so the fact he got to the No. 51 pick was surprising. A good athlete with feel to hit and some raw, untapped power, Lewis’ skillset suggests above-average regular at shortstop if all the tools come together. He’s a cold-weather bat … seeing how he adjusts to better competition will be key.

Colorado Rockies

The Rockies have one of the more questionable futures of any big-league club, meaning it’s vital they do well in the Draft. This year, they did fantastic, starting with the No. 3 overall pick, and three Top-50 selections. And they capitalized.

Best Player: Charlie Condon, OF — Georgia

Condon’s power in Coors Field in a couple of years is nothing short of a dream come true for the Rockies. He had one of the best offensive seasons in collegiate history in 2024, and there’s the potential for a game-wrecker at the plate.

Best Pick: Brody Brecht, RHP — Iowa

Brecht making it to the Rockies at 38 was baffling. The right-hander has elite arm talent, with a fastball up to 101 mph and a 70-grade power slider, plus the frame and athleticism suggesting every bit the potential to throw strikes and stay in the rotation. He does have work to do in that department, but this kind of arm doesn’t come along often.

The Rockies need a constant flow of arms coming through their system, and Brecht brings the bat-missing upside Colorado requires. Add him to last year’s first-round pick Chase Dollander and Colorado has the start of some better days on the mound.

DOYLE: Day 1 Winners

Pittsburgh Pirates

Pittsburgh has something developing at the big-league level, in large part because of how they’ve handled recent drafts. This year, they had the No. 9 overall pick and three Top-50 selections.

Best Player: Konnor Griffin, SS/CF — Jackson Prep (MI)

Griffin’s an athletic specimen with tools to dream on at the plate, in the field, and on the bases. It’s a 6-foot-4, big-league frame with plus speed and a cannon of an arm up to 97 mph on the mound. He likely fits somewhere up the middle of the field long-term, with the potential for 30-plus homers and overall a superstar-caliber ceiling.

Best Pick: Wyatt Sanford, SS — Independence HS (TX)

Sanford is a surefire shortstop defender with a sweet left-handed swing and blooming potential at the plate. This spring, Sanford grew into more muscle and polish at the plate, and he’s a potential regular who could reach 20 homers, a la Dansby Swanson.

What are we doing here? Well, I could not tell you. We're a full calendar year away from the 2025 MLB Draft, but the 2024 Draft is in the books and we're more than halfway through the 2024 MLB season. With that comes standings and lottery odds. This mock draft will reflect the standings as of Sunday, July 7.

Is this an exercise in futility? Without question. A waste of time? Sure, maybe. But are you here reading it?

*mic drop*

Thanks to our friends at Tankathon, we simulated how the lottery would play out for next year. As things currently stand just three games separate the team with the best odds to land the No. 4 overall pick and the team with the odds to land the No. 14 pick. A lot will change. Randomizing things was the only way to go. Here are the results.

*Winning percentages frozen at **around** the 80-82 games mark

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following rankings and evaluations by FSS PLUS are based on subjective analysis and industry sources, and do not influence, are not influenced by, or are affiliated with the opinions and reports of Future Stars Series scouting and development staff.

1. Colorado Rockies

Jace LaViolette, OF -- Texas A&M
HOMETOWN: Katy, Texas
HEIGHT: 6-6
WEIGHT: 230
BAT/THROW: L-L

LaViolette has established himself as arguably the top college bat currently available in the 2025 Draft. It's size, it's physicality, it's left-handed with borderline elite-level power. There's a strong approach offensively, above-average run times on the bases and in the field, as well as the chance to play centerfield if only at a fringy level as a pro. Still, he's tailor-made for right field at the next level where he'd be an asset defensively in almost every way.

LaViolette has shown some swing-and-miss in his game (albeit not an alarming amount of whiffs), but with another year of seasoning, he could see that take a jump in his draft-eligible junior campaign.

LaViolette enjoyed a .305/.449/.726 sophomore season smashing 29 homers and stealing seven bags. He'll be even more protected in a loaded A&M lineup in 2025 and should see that slash-line bloat to even more impressive levels.

At 32-58, it's been a difficult year for the Rockies on the field. Importantly, if the team were to land a top-six pick in 2025 as is suggested here, they would be ineligible to pick inside the top nine picks in 2026 with the new rules set forth by the CBA. And while still far out, the 2026 Draft could be the best since 2023.

The MLB Draft is behind us as are the risks for schools losing players to the pro game. Some schools truly cashed out landing premium talent when they may have not expected to.

LSU Tigers

Jay Johnson and the LSU Tigers cleaned up in this Draft. The Tigers did end up losing LHP Griffin Herring to the Yankees and Fidel Ulloa to the Rockies. They may also lose right-handed pitcher Luke Hayden who was planning on transferring from Indiana State. He was selected by the Reds in the eighth round.

All that said, LSU was able to hang onto mashing first baseman Jared Jones. His impact on the 2025 lineup cannot be overstated. That's 30-homer potential heading back to Baton Rouge. The team was also able to keep right-hander Gavin Guidry, infielder Michael Braswell and outfielder Josh Pearson, three experienced pieces who will come in handy in 2025 so long as they don't sign undrafted free agent deals this summer.

On the high school side of things LSU will not see infielders Konnor Griffin or Kale Fountain wear purple and gold. They are also unlikely to see left-handed pitchers Cam Caminiti or Boston Bateman on campus. All four were drafted early enough that it's plenty safe to assume they'll go pro. But keeping right-hander William Schmidt, catcher Cade Arrambide and outfielder Derek Curiel is huge. Throw in talented bluechips like shortstop Michael Ryan, outfielder John Pearson and right-hander Mavrick Rizy (among others) and LSU has restocked the cupboards for next spring.

Day one of the MLB Draft came with plenty of surprises. From Travis Bazzana to Braylon Payne, there was eyebrow-raising aplenty. Day two figures to be another spectacle with plenty of teams with more money to spend. We'll get into that at the end of the article but first let's identify five teams I found to come out winners.

Colorado Rockies

The 2024 Draft class is not the strongest class we have seen in recent years. It lacks top-end high school talent and the college talent quickly shows its warts outside of the top ten picks. The Rockies obviously did extremely well to land the No. 1 overall player on the FSS Plus board in Georgia OF Charlie Condon. But beyond that they did what more teams needed to do in this draft. Take risks.

Iowa right-handed pitcher Brody Brecht is electricity personified. He ranked as the No. 26 overall prospect at FSS Plus pre-draft and the Rockies were able to steer him down to pick 38. He is by no means a sure thing. And there will be considerable player development necessary to see Brecht meet his sky-high ceiling. But in a class littered with low ceilings and red flags, the Rockies took some risk and shot high. From this chair, that was the right way to go. Adding Texas outfielder Jared Thomas in round two was also a strong selection. For too long he's been miscast at the University of Texas and should now get full-time run in centerfield in the pro game. They've had success with guys who bounced around positions in college before settling in at the pro level (Cole Carrigg, Sterlin Thompson). Thomas could be the next to blossom.

It was a banner day for high school prospects on day one of the MLB Draft as 3o preps were selected on the day. In total, 40.5 percent of the names called in Fort Worth Sunday night were of the high school variety.

Never to be outdone, college prospects dominated the top of the Draft this year, the first eight picks all being of the older variety. In total close to 60 percent of day one was college performers.

There are still plenty of players deemed top 1oo prospects by FSS PLUS destined to hear their name called tomorrow. The biggest name folks will be looking for tomorrow? Mississippi State outfielder Dakota Jordan. He's likely to hear his name quite early on Monday. But it figures to be another day for organizations to be opportunistic with high school talent too. There are still two players who ranked inside the top 50 at FSS available in Blackfoot (Id.) right-handed pitcher Dax Whitney and Ankeny (Ia.) right-handed pitcher Joey Oakie.

Here are the top 20 players available on Day 2 of the Draft.

1. Cleveland Guardians

JJ Wetherholt, 2B/3B -- West Virginia
HOMETOWN: Mars, PA
HEIGHT: 5-11
WEIGHT: 190
BAT/THROW: L-R
DRAFT SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW: Watch Video

It's difficult to find a landing spot for JJ Wetherholt until pick five if he doesn't go No. 1 overall. The slot value for the fifth pick is $7.7 million. Wetherholt and The Ballengee Group could agree to a deal with the Guardians at $8 million and save Cleveland more than $2.5 million to spend on later picks. The tricky part? Who do they save that money for? Look no further than who else Ballengee Group represents.

They also have PJ Morlando and Griffin Burkholder, two highly-regarded prep outfielders. So is that the skinny? Wetherholt at 1, Morlando at 36 and Burkholder at 45?

If we're having fun with it why not surmise a scenario where Travis Bazzana goes No. 1 overall? Bazzana is represented by Excel. They also represent Theodore Gillen. Could a combination of Bazzana at $9.2 million and Theodore Gillen at $4 million make sense? Something to watch for.
